The dieffenbachia also known as the "dumb cane" plant is toxic to both humans and animals. When dealing with this plant, it is suggested to use gloves as the sap can cause contact dermatitis.

Watering: Water when the soil is between 25-50% dry. Make sure to use well draining potting mix as this plant does not like it's feet wet. Fertilize with half strength fertilizer during the spring and summer months.

Environment: Dieffenbachia loves the light. This plant is also a bright indirect light type of plant. Bright indirect light is when the plant can see the sky without the suns rays directly touching the foliage. (The mother plant is sitting in the sill of an East facing window.) These plants thrive in temperatures of 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit. This plant prefers moderate humidity between 60-75%.

Growth: This plant is somewhat of a decent grower. If the soil is kept too dry or too wet, the leaves and stalk will droop. Crinkly or crispy leaves could be due to lack of water as well. As the plant grows, it will shed old leaves as it grows new ones, so don't think you've done anything wrong. If your plant becomes too tall and leggy, don't hesitate to chop to your desired height. Side shoots will sprout from the area you cut. Propagation is as simple as sticking a cutting in some water, or over a bed of moist sphagnum moss.
