Pets & Houseplants
I must admit, I’ve always wanted a cat but unfortunately for me I’m allergic so I just have a dog. For those of us who have pets, you also are aware of their surroundings and how to keep them safe. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to have a furry companion and houseplants as well. There are a lot of plants that are toxic to our furry babies but there are quite a few that are not. I’ve listed nontoxic plants for you and your grimalkins to enjoy.
- Watermelon Pepperomia
This plant is both beautiful and compact, not to mention safe for your fuzzy friend. The care retirements for this baby are also fairly simple. Give the plant bright indirect light, water when 50-70% dry, and pot in a mix that’s well draining.
- Rabbits Foot Fern
The rabbits foot fern is a very unique fern. Just because you’re limited in what plants you can have in your home, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice uniqueness. The fronds are delicate and the fuzzy rhizome looks exactly like a rabbits foot. These plants like to remain damp but not soggy and be sure to give it bright light. Stay away from direct sun.
- Burros Tail
We have made it to a succulent! The burros tail is a wonderful trailing plant that keeps on giving. Every little bead on the stem has the ability to start a brand new plant. If you touch this plant, little babies go flying. Just plop the little beans on soil, mist, and cover for humidity. In no time you’ll have a Burros army. They can hang up to three feet long.
- Musa Acuminata
The ever famed banana tree! These babies can come green out even variegated. This tropical beauty is no doubt beautiful in any home. Give the baby bright light and water when the top inch of soil gets dry.
- Money Tree
We’ve all more than likely heard of the money tree. Thought to bring good fortune, luck, and money to the home it graces its presence with. So easy to care for, you just give it bright light and let it dry out in between waterings. The caudexes of the trunk help store water for the plant making it drought tolerant.
- Spider Plant
The one, the only, spider plant. Spider plants are known for being beginner friendly, but now you know they’re pet friendly as well. Another bright light plant that likes to dry out between waterings is perfect for the feline parent. This plant can tolerate low light levels but give it bright light to thrive.
- Rubber Plant
This baby stays compact and is also nontoxic. It’s perfect for those who have limited space but want a touch of green foliage. The leaves are heart shaped and very shiny. This plant can also tolerate low light conditions and allow it dry out between waterings.
- Echeveria
Another beautiful succulent for the busy plant parent. This plant is compact, likes bright light, and is drought tolerant. The more light you give an echeveria, the more you sun stress it, this causes the colors become brighter. Sun stressed echeveria are some of the most beautiful specimens.
- Prayer Plants
This plant isn’t necessarily beginner friendly but it’s bit ridiculously complicated either. Give this plant bright indirect light and water when the top inch of soil is dry. The leaves curl up at night and open during the day. It’s interesting watching this plant dance about.
- Staghorn Fern
This exotic plant that resembles the antlers of a buck is a beautiful addition to any plant space. This plant can be mounted or potted regularly. There’s endless planty opportunities for this tropical wonder. As usual, give bright indirect light and water regularly.
- Hoya Carnosa
The Hoya carnosa aka wax plant is naturally variegated and adds a spark to wherever it’s placed. The waxy leaves retain water so watering is only needed when the plant gets 50-75% dry. Give the plant bright indirect light to thrive.
- Moth Orchid
Orchids have a bad rap for being hard to keep but that’s wrong. This orchid only needs bright indirect light and water every week or so. Plant in orchid bark to keep her happy.
